Carolina Candelaria MSPT

In private practice in Southport since 2004, Carolina specializes in gentle hands-on manual techniques on land or in water, which integrate and respect the whole being. With her extensive clinical experience of over 15 years, Carolina is able to integrate varied aquatic and manual therapy techniques into a holistic approach to physical therapy which can serve even the most fragile and involved client’s special needs.

Carolina received her Master of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina in 1993 and has resided in the Brunswick County, Oak Island are since then. She is trained in Biomechanical Evaluation and Manual Therapy of the spine, limbs and feet, balance and movement disorders and their orthopedic and neurological and post surgical rehabilitation. Carolina was employed at Children’s Hospital in Washington DC, and then for 13 years as staff therapist at NHRMC and Cape Fear Hospitals in Wilmington prior to opening her private practice in 2004. Her clinical experience includes critical care, acute care, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury in Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation facilities. She founded the first Aquatic physical therapy program at Coastal Rehab Hospital, and later at Oleander Rehabilitation Center she was a member of the Aquatic and Manual Physical Therapy teams focusing on orthopedic post surgical, spinal musculoskeletal disorders, fibromyalgia, arthritis, head, neck and back pain.

She continues a life-long study of Oriental Medicine practicing Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung for over 20 years. While pursuing her Bachelor of science degree at University of New Mexico with majors in Biology, French and minors in Spanish Languages, Music and Dance, she studied ballet, modern dance, Bartenioff fundamentals and Laban Movement Analysis, Pilates, Feldenkreis and Alexander technique, and was a semi professional performer and choreographer in the Washington DC area. At the University of Maryland she taught wheelchair dance and movement for Elders at the Adult Health and Development Program and Dancers of the Third age. She trained 5 years in Shiatsu with the Ohashi Institute in Washington, DC, New York and Dai Bohatsu Zendo and continues advanced training in Process Acupressure and Craniosacral Therapy with the Upledger Institute. She practices multiple manual therapy techniques including Zero Balancing, Myofascial and Neurofascial Release, Muscle Energy, Positional Release, Neuromuscular Therapy and neuromuscular reeducation techniques such as Feldenkreis, Alexander, PNF, yoga and Pilates, Meeks osteoporosis and Bones for Life. She is certified in Watsu, Wassertanzen and Ai Chi.

Carolina Manual Therapy is a Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare, Tricare and Vocational Rehab provider accepting MD referrals and self referrals for physical therapy, Watsu and bodywork sessions.
